The professional comedian is an entrepreneur and, as such, is required to understand all the elements of running a small business. This course will give students the essential understanding of how the industry works and will include marketing and self-promotion. Professional conduct and etiquette, although stressed in every aspect of the program, will be emphasized in this course. Students will gain a foundation to handle basic accounting, tax and investment issues and contract negotiation. Students will also explore working conditions in different media; the relationships between technical and artistic elements and among the people who create an electronic production; the variety of forms, styles and genres of recorded media; and other selected topics.
