This course examines the factors that affect the health of population groups and the methods used to assess health differences between populations. Beginning with the socioeconomic determinants of health, those non-medical conditions that affect a person's opportunity to be healthy and their risk of illness, we examine factors of population health that can be affected by health and social policy. We will also identify the behavioural and lifestyle factors that affect health and risk of illness. Through application, students will learn the main data sources and methods for measuring health disparities and community health needs. Students will learn how governments, agencies, and communities aim to reduce health disparities between populations through health promotion programs. Students will undertake a research project to apply the course materials to a contemporary health problem.
