Students learn to write impactful in-depth features and investigative story reports.Using advanced research skills and newsgathering techniques, students will identify and generate stories hidden in data. As they expand their knowledge of potential sources students will critically evaluate the benefits/risks of using any given source. They will discuss the role of polling and statistical data and gain competencies with tools and programs that assist in the growing field of data journalism and apply these in the development and presentation of a feature news research topic. Students will explore Open Data, GIS Mapping and formal Freedom of Information requests and learn the need to draw on professional expertise to discern findings and implications enabled through number crunching and database management programs.
