Contextual Storytelling

Course Code: JNAL 5004

Academic Year: 2020-2021

With the pace of digital news production and increasing competitive pressures to report stories quickly, the challenges to reporting in context have never been greater. Students will be immersed in the intense ongoing demand to cover news stories in depth through sophisticated inquiry into the applicable story precedents, relevant socio-political and economic factors, and identification of related themes and follow-up angles. Quick synthesis of large amounts of information and critical thinking skills are central to the undertaking here, and students will work on developing a confident sense of what the story at hand is about and the optimal way to tell it. Team and individual production of such in-depth news stories also requires refining skills in discerning valuable sources, conducting interviews at higher levels of complexity and anticipating the directions in which stories will continue to develop.
