Reporting in Contemporary Canada

This course is designed to introduce students to some fundamental skills of journalism while also addressing the unique challenges and opportunities of reporting in today's diverse Canadian society. Students will learn the basics of news values, story angles, and pitching while also delving into the complexities of contextual storytelling. The course will also explore personal and institutional bias in journalism and how journalists can meet the needs of diverse news consumers to better reflect the communities they serve. Students will be introduced to the concept of source diversity auditing, a tool to ensure that their reporting reflects the contemporary makeup of Canada.
