This course introduces learners to broadcast writing and the production of audio and video journalism, creating effective news and general information items for traditional media delivery and/or for embedding as part of digital content packages. Instruction for advanced learners will include writing and story construction for short-length video and audio stories, camera framing and recording techniques using smartphones, editing techniques, video/audio interviewing/questioning techniques for short-length segments, and basic on-air performance skills including voice inflection, appearance and body language. Course materials will include an examination of ethical controversies, challenges and considerations arising from the creation of all video/audio items; students will be asked to reflect on and analyze their experience in pitching story ideas based on their understanding of current events and news values.
