Students learn entrepreneurial skills to advance a professional journalism career in full-time media positions as well as the freelance economy. Emphasis is placed on finding meaningful, financially stable journalistic work in a transitioning industry. Students meet with successful entrepreneurs and develop a self- promotion strategy that embraces digital opportunities and traditional resources. They learn how to pitch stories, showcase their portfolio online, and build a brand to not only advance their own interest but that of any other media company/enterprise. Students create strategic business plans, evaluate corporate structures and apply tax strategies. The transferability of journalism skills to non-media institutions requiring media content including NGOs, humanitarian groups, political organizations and other corporate entities will be addressed.
