Independent Study

Course Code: JNAL 5504

Academic Year: 2025-2026

Combining classroom, lab and online learning, students consolidate their journalism skills and produce an advanced project that reflects their storytelling interests, such as science, sports, entertainment, business or politics. Students can use the opportunity afforded by Independent Study to intensify their focus on the journalistic modality and discipline-specific communication practices of their choice and develop an in-depth familiarity with the techniques and tools of that platform, drawing on specialized faculty support in the process. Faculty will guide students in the successful pitching of journalistic projects and evaluate their proposals for a wide range of projects. This course accordingly supports student efforts to enhance their own web presence, develop professional portfolios and even compete for entrepreneurial support through work ranging from a multiplatform series on a news topic to the creation of a high-traffic blog.
