The Business of Being a Journalist

This course focuses on best practices for working journalists. Through analysis, discussion and presentation, students learn how to establish themselves as working professionals in a changing and digital media industry. Students gain direction on negotiating contracts, discussing job benefits, setting up a freelance business, entrepreneurial journalism, copyright and ownership issues, labour and human rights (union and non-union) matters, and invoicing and submitting tax forms. They develop a thorough understanding of the challenges and demands they face and how to meet them head-on as working journalists.
