Students study the effect of structural loads on mechanical components by analyzing the failure modes of load bearing components. Students apply analytical techniques necessary to successfully design components by identifying the load conditions, optimizing the component's shape and size, and selecting a material of suitable strength. The main structural elements examined by students in this course are beams, columns, and connections.
