The study of strength of materials is concerned with the design of structural load bearing components. These load bearing components fail in two main ways: fracture and excessive deformation. The course develops the analytical techniques necessary to design a load-bearing component which will not fail. The design methodology developed involves identifying the load conditions, optimizing the component's shape and size and selecting a material of suitable strength. The main structural elements examined in this course are beams, columns and connections.
