This course examines various songwriting devices through the analysis and practical application of the contemporary popular song form. Students are exposed to a wide range of writing techniques for the purpose of deepening the proficiency and quality of their own melodies, harmonies and lyrics. Topics include melodic construction, harmonic modulation, modal harmony, productive repetition, musical genre, figurative language and other advanced rhetorical devices. Along with opportunities for collaboration with classmates, students will also create, perform and record their own song compositions to receive critical feedback on their creative work.
