This asynchronous online course examines the history and context of American and Canadian music from the mid-1930s to the early 1960s. Topics include swing, bebop, cool jazz, hardbop, free jazz, rhythm & blues, urban blues, rock 'n' roll and rockabilly, country & western, and the folk revival. This course will focus on exploring inequitable practices in the music industry during this time period. With the support of mixed media, this course will engage with issues relating to identity, hybridity, and cultural appropriation.
