?This course examines the critical discourse relating to the history, sociology and philosophy of Canadian and American musical expression. Students analyze the influence of aesthetics, Neo-Marxism, critical theory, technology, race, ethnicity, and class on various genres of music including the British Blues Revival, jazz-rock fusion, psychedelic and progressive rock, singer-songwriter, soul, and disco.Class discussions focus on readings in sociology, musicology and philosophy and serve to enrich the students' perception and understanding of the musical experience in contemporary culture. The historically marginalized contributions of equity-deserving groups will also be emphasized in this course.
