Critical Perspectives on Music 2

This course further examines the scholarly discourse relating to the history, sociology and philosophy of Canadian and American musical expression. Students critically analyze the influence of feminist theory, gender, taste, digital technology and postmodernism on various genres of music including contemporary jazz, punk rock, hip hop and electronic dance music. Class discussions focus on readings in sociology, musicology and gender studies and serve to enrich the students perception and understanding of the musical experience in contemporary culture with particular attention given to historically marginalized groups.
