This course is designed to introduce students to fibre-optic cable and its network applications. Fibre-cable construction, characteristics and operation will be covered with an emphasis on cable performance. Different fibre-optic transmitters, including light emitting diodes (LEDs), vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSELs) and lasers as well as their performance characteristics and applications will be examined. Students will learn fibre terminations, including ST, SC and SFF. Fibre testing and verification will also be covered.
