Leadership and Human Resource Management

This course examines human resource challenges and processes, including employment legislation, discrimination, harassment, management strategies in staff planning and selection, orientation, health and safety, in both unionized and non-unionized work environments. Students explore their own leadership style as it relates to decision making and communication in the work environment. Through case studies and in-depth discussion, the concepts of taking personal responsibility for the management and leadership of human resources through empowerment, performance management, coaching and counselling, progressive corrective action and termination and the management of union relationships, are examined. Skills essential to building effective working relationships such as leadership, team building, decision making, motivation, and conflict resolution are analyzed.
