Introduction to Canada's Legal System

This course introduces students to the Canadian legal system and its role in Canadian society. The course canvasses the evolution and explains the doctrinal underpinnings of the common law and civil law traditions, which form the core of the Canadian system. The constitutional basis of legislative and judicial authority is examined together with the impact of the entrenchment of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in the Canadian Constitution. The course covers the fundamentals of property law, examining real property, personal property and intellectual property and the priority issues that arise. Students are introduced to forms of business enterprises and the liability of business entrepreneurs. In the context of consumer law, consumer protection remedies are evaluated for redressing transactions involving goods and services.
