This course introduces students to the primary and secondary resources used in legal research and a system for utilizing them in achieving effective research results. The importance of the doctrine of stare decisis and the need for noting up case law and updating statute law are emphasized and reinforced with in-depth research assignments. The features and benefits of the various research tools, including computer-assisted research methodology, are thoroughly examined. The results of electronic/online legal research are synthesized and evaluated in the context of accelerating the research process. Recommended organizational models and general rules of style are canvassed in guiding students in the preparation of case briefs and other forms of legal writing. Through various exercises, students learn to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems in diverse areas of study.
