Students in this course will examine the role of recreation as a service and the role of the recreationist as change agent, referring agent and advocate. Students will develop relationship building skills to connect and engage citizens and community groups in the planning and delivery of recreation and leisure services and programs. They will examine community development principles and values (e.g., advocacy, cooperative action and healthy communities) to better understand how to assist individuals and community groups to manage change. Furthermore, this course provides students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to work with volunteers. Throughout the course, students develop strategies to leverage the increasing necessity to effectively work with volunteers.
