This course provides students with an overview of historical energy use in residential, commercial and industrial/institutional buildings. Technologies used to harness the energy of the sun, wind and earth will be introduced as well as how to evaluate these technologies as sources of energy. Evaluating these energy sources requires that students understand how to map elements of the natural and built environment. Students will collect data related to renewable energy potential through field observations. Additional data will be collected and analyzed from online atlases and databases. The impact of federal, provincial and municipal regulations and incentives will be studied to enable students to perform basic financial feasibility calculations.
