Mental Health Foundations

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the personal and structural issues confronting people who have mental health concerns. Using an empowerment approach that stresses the perspective of labeled or otherwise disadvantaged people, students will learn about how to work effectively with older adults, and people with labels such as psychiatric disorder, intellectual disability, cognitive disorder, eating disorder, and substance use disorders. Students will be expected to adhere to the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice in the classroom and in their coursework.
