This course introduces students to key issues, foundational concepts, policies, and historical events that have shaped the experiences of Indigenous peoples and communities in Canada, with a particular focus on child welfare issues relevant to social service work practice. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, and critical analyses, case studies, and course work, students will explore the legacy of settler colonialism, the impact of government policies, and the ongoing challenges and resilience of Indigenous communities in what is today called Canada.
