In Foundations of TCM, students explore the history, theoretical framework, and holistic model of the practice of traditional Chinese medicine. Students learn the core TCM theories, including Yin/Yang theory, five elements theory, meridian theory and TCM organ theory. Through lectures, case analysis and classroom presentations, students apply these theories and principles to recognize the normal structure and functions of the body, and their significance in clinical practice. In the second part of this course, students learn the TCM concepts of body constitution, body-mind relationship, pathogenic factors, TCM aetiology, pathogenesis, disease prevention and general TCM treatment principles. Students apply these concepts to analyze symptoms to reach a TCM diagnosis and establish treatment principles.
