Concepts In Mental Health

This course provides an introduction to current mental health concepts and intervention strategies applicable to the role of the therapy assistant within Ontario's health system. By developing familiarity with a range of common mental health disorders, students will be positioned to build effective therapeutic relationships with clients who have either a primary mental health diagnosis or co-occurring symptoms in the context of other health conditions. Emphasis on coaching, psychoeducation and use of occupation-based strategies will equip students with entry-level tools to implement therapy programming as a member of the healthcare team. Risk management and documentation will be addressed for situations unique to this population.
