Art History

Course Code: VADA 105

Academic Year: 2020-2021

This course concentrates on the major technical and formal aspects of the visual arts from the Paleolithic to the Modern periods. Students will explore a wide range of art forms, including objective figurative drawing, painting, sculpture, prints and architecture, in a loosely chronological fashion from various methodological approaches. Key formal issues, such as the development of perspective, the representation of the figure, depictions of nature and the application of colour and light will be analyzed in some detail. Accompanying this analysis will be a study of pivotal historical personalities and the responses of artists to the challenge of creating images. Beyond western art history, students will be introduced to artistic historical movements from locales around the world to broaden the scope of study toward one of relevance in a globalized world.
