This course focuses on a study of Layer 1, 2 and 3 functions applied to ground and wireless telecommunications networks. The course begins with a study of fundamentals of telecommunications, serial transmission standards and physical layer concepts followed by a detailed study of digital transmission systems, PCM and T-Carrier Systems. Data link Layer is studied with an emphasis on error detection, correction methods and HDLC standards for data link control. TCP/IP protocol suite is examined as a practical example of network and transport layer protocol for data transmission over the internet.
