Part one of this course is designed to introduce students to the theories and concepts of interpersonal communication. In addition, students practice verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills, all of which are essential in order to function effectively in the field of corrections. Boundary issues, anger and conflict resolution, providing constructive feedback, practicing tolerance and learning how to express difficult emotions appropriately are covered. In addition, students begin the process of self-reflection in order to gain insights into their own behaviour and attitudes. Part two of this course involves the study of group dynamics and allows the student to apply their interpersonal skills to a group setting. It examines the basic issues and key concepts of the group process and outlines how group leaders can apply these concepts when working with groups in institutional and community settings. Students are involved in experiential learning groups during the class.
