Introduction to Language 2

Course Code

TESL 5012

Academic Year

2016-2017

Students will increase their understanding of how language teachers conceptualize, describe, and understand language in general, and English in particular. While the course is theoretical, there is an increasing emphasis placed on how the theories apply to language teaching. Areas of study include the sound systems (phonology), word structure (morphology), sentence structure (syntax), context (pragmatics), and meaning (semantics & vocabulary), along with their place and perceptions in society (sociolinguistics). It provides the necessary background for TESL-Ontario certification and for students to continue their study of language formally or informally at a more advanced level as they gain experience as language teachers.
