This course is designed to introduce the student to fibre-optic cable and its network applications. Fibre-cable construction, characteristics, and operation will be covered with an emphasis on cable performance. Different fibre-optic transmitters including light emitting diodes (LEDs), vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSELs), and lasers will be examined, as well as their performance characteristics and applications. Students will learn fibre terminations including ST, SC, and SFF. Fibre testing and verification will also be covered.
