Data management plays a large role in the daily activities of researchers and organizations. This course will provides a comprehensive introduction to data management and data analysis; however, the focus will be on preparing data for analysis. The course examines issues related to data organization, representation, access, storage, and processing. The format of the course includes lecture, and hands-on exercises. Students are encouraged to practice applying the knowledge and skills taught in class to their own data. Knowing how to operate widely used software packages to manage data is critical to the research process. In this course, students will calculate fundamental descriptive statistics such as mean, median, and mode along with measures of variability. Students will learn how to present data in a variety of graphical forms such as histograms, stem and leaf graphs, and scatterplots. The course will also focus on how to use these summary statistics and forms to aid decisions about how to best represent and analyze data. Simple comparisons between means, correlation coefficients and coefficients of reliability and validity will be calculated. Students will also learn how to individualize the program by generating formulae that manipulate and combine variables as required.
