Each day we are exposed to a multitude of survey research findings in different forms, through the media, our education and workplaces. We may even make decisions based on these research findings. In this course students will learn the science behind survey research, how surveys are designed, conducted and finally reported on. Students will have an opportunity to learn about selecting research participants through appropriate sampling techniques. Understanding demographics within a population and how to apply that knowledge to sampling and analyzing results will also be covered. Statistics Canada information and Canadian Census Statistics will be introduced as a means of studying social, economic and demographic trends and their contribution to societal change. How to write good research questions, how to ask those questions and then how to analyze the data collected will be the main focus of the course. Students will learn to design a survey questionnaire, collect the data and discuss findings.
