This course examines the foundation of theatre in a number of contexts. It focuses on three particular foundation moments and then traces the process of development and evolution from those eras. The three foundation eras are Ancient Greece (and how that served as the source for the theatre of Rome), Medieval Europe (and the evolution into Renaissance and Shakespearean theatre) and feudal Japan (focusing on Noh Theatre). Students are also required to attend professional productions in order to gain an experiential knowledge of a variety of architectural and performance traditions.
