Course Code

CJS 250

Academic Year

2016-2017

This course introduces students to the skills that they need to develop as they transition from college to the workforce, and focuses on the basic knowledge necessary for gaining and maintaining employment. The course is designed as a highly interactive and participatory learning environment where students are provided with opportunities to identify, learn, practise and enact skills that are relevant to their success in the workforce. The course also builds on many of the courses that were part of the first year of study in the program such as conflict management, ethics, and interpersonal and writing skills. The current course emerges as a cumulative piece that enables students to bring these initial skill sets into a comprehensive grouping that also allows them to link the individual course to their practice in the field. Building on the Ministry of Education and Training s employability skills profile and varying career skills development programs, the students focus on skills such as conflict resolution, diversity management, leadership, personal skills inventories, personal interaction and management styles, resum and cover letter preparation, job interviewing, and job search. The course also pays particular attention to the relevance of professionalism and workplace ethics. Upon completion, students should be able to evaluate career selection, demonstrate appropriate employability skills and satisfactorily perform work-related competencies to enable them to make a successful transition from school to work.
