This message is to the Humber community to inform, acknowledge and offer support to those impacted by the anti-black racial slurs found in a men’s washroom at Lakeshore Campus on December 5, 2019. We are saddened and disappointed that this hateful and racist incident has happened on campus.
We take any and all forms of racism seriously and want to emphasize that we do not accept racism or hate on our campuses. We are investigating the incident and will continue to develop systemic responses to address racism, including anti-black racism on campus. The offensive and hurtful message has been removed.
Misinformation, prejudice and fear are often at the heart of these types of acts. As a community and as an institution, Humber values diversity, equity, inclusion and the health and well-being of all our students and staff. We have embedded these principles into how we operate, and they inform our expectation of how we conduct ourselves and interact with one another.
We must continue to put our value of equity into action, working each day to create a campus environment where diversity is celebrated, and our students and staff experience a caring, supportive and inclusive community.
We need to be allies to those who experience harassment and discrimination and speak out against discrimination and racism in all its forms. We need to listen when colleagues, friends and the community talk about their lived experience with racism. We need to offer support and act to change things for the better.
I encourage you to join me in working to ensure that the college’s core values prevail over closed-minded acts of prejudice, stereotypes and discrimination. Please take a moment to speak about the importance of inclusion and respect with students, colleagues and friends.
