Winning student team designs Passive House proposal
October 11, 2016
by Michelle Bozzetto
In December 2015, six student teams designed conceptual schemes for the Passive House: Research Partnership Forum held at Humber, and a winning team was chosen. In Winter 2016, faculty member Elizabeth Fenuta and the winning team of students partnered with Andrew Peel, Certified Passive House Consultant, and Sheena Sharp, Licensed Architect and former President of the Ontario Association of Architects, in order to further develop the Passive House design.
The multidisciplinary team included students from the Architectural Technology, Sustainable Energy and Building Technology, Project Management, Computer Engineering Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, and Supply Chain Management programs. They all worked cohesively to test various design schemes and produce a detailed site plan, floor plans, section details, and elevations of a Passive House.
“We, as a team, did our best to reach a professional level in architectural technology while keeping innovative,” said Youngsang Kim, student from the Architectural Technology Program. “Any experience based on realistic work is valuable. I appreciate the opportunity.”
The proposed scheme and research gathered by the students will serve as a foundation for an Active House to be constructed at The Kortright Centre as one of seven new innovative and sustainability focused buildings that will constitute The BRE Innovation Park. The aim is to have the students continue developing the project in collaboration with industry partner Great Gulf Homes to build an Active House.
