As we all continue this unprecedented journey together, we remain committed to our students, to our mandate and to our values. At Humber, these commitments don’t change during challenging times; in fact, they guide us in all that we do. 

To ensure the health and safety of our community, in the Winter 2021 term, half of our programs will be offered entirely online, with the remainder having both online and in-person components. Eighty-four per cent of courses, including all electives, will be delivered online.

As we are following physical distancing and other health and safety measures, and limiting the number of people onsite and in class, on-campus learning will only occur for courses where it is safe and necessary to do so.

We continue to keep our students and employees connected and to be transparent and accountable with our community. Below please find a message to students that provides an overview of our current environment and signal our plans for Summer 2021 and Fall 2021 semesters. 

Returning Students

Hello Humber students. I hope that your Winter 2021 semester is off to a strong start. Looking ahead to future semesters, I know you may have questions about what the upcoming Summer and Fall terms will look like.

I am writing today to let you know that like the current semester, we expect the Summer 2021 and Fall 2021 terms to have a mix of online and in-person programming.

All in-person courses will be delivered with a focus on safety and according to public health and government requirements, including physical distancing and class size caps, as required. While we are hopeful that we will be able to offer more opportunities for on-campus learning in the fall, our ability to do so will be contingent on government direction provided to all colleges and universities.

Sharing Information about Programs and Courses

We expect to announce our detailed Summer 2021 program and course-level delivery plans, including information about field and clinical placements by the week of March 1. Detailed Fall 2021 delivery plans will be announced by the week of June 1.

We know you need course-level information to make your plans. We are working to ensure that we provide you with the courses and activities that reflect the latest health and safety measures in Ontario. We are currently:

  • reviewing all of our programs and courses and their learning outcomes
  • tracking our ongoing online and on-campus academic activities
  • identifying which courses can only be delivered on-campus
  • planning for elective courses to be delivered online
  • monitoring the local COVID-19 situation, and required health and safety measures
  • working with our industry and community partners to ensure we have clear information about the availability and format of work integrated learning opportunities.

Regardless of delivery mode, you will have opportunities to pursue your career and academic goals and engage meaningfully with your peers and professors using different platforms and technology.

Please note that some program/course information may be delayed as delivery for those specific areas may be dependent on information from external or affiliated parties that we may not receive until later than the dates indicated. If this is the case, we will communicate to the impacted students as soon as possible.

Keeping You Informed

Our Return to Campus micrositeUpdates and FAQ pages will continue to be updated to provide key resources and information about our current situation and what to expect when coming to campus.

As details about vaccination requirements for the college community become available, any relevant information will be shared with students via email, on our website and on our social media channels.

Planning for a Virtual Spring Convocation

As public health concerns continue with COVID-19, Humber has also made the difficult decision not to hold in-person Spring convocation ceremonies. More information about virtual convocation will be shared in the coming weeks.

Providing you a Great Experience

We continue to be committed to providing rich, career-focused education that prepares graduates for future success and to being transparent and accountable to you, always.

There are many ways to get support and to connect with your peers and the Humber community. All of our student services are still being offered (most virtually), and we expect to continue to provide high quality student support. We know that you and your fellow students continue to live, work and study in difficult times, and we are here for you. As per our student commitment, we are focused on your success as students and as individuals. Welcome to the Winter 2021 term

The following message was sent to Winter 2021 students on January 14, 2021.

Welcome to the Winter 2021 term. Whether you are a new or returning student, we are happy to have you with us. I hope that you were able to enjoy the holiday break and find some time to recharge. 

As you may know, for this term, half of our programs will be offered entirely online, with the remainder having both online and in-person components. Eighty-four per cent of courses, including all electives, will be delivered online. 

While the provincial government announced a state of emergency, as well as stay at home orders on January 12, Ontario colleges and universities are permitted to continue to offer limited in-person programming with existing health and safety measures in place, and students with on-site courses are permitted to travel to/from campus. As such, Humber will continue to offer in-person components that are critical to the practical learning outcomes of our programs. 

Tremendous work went into preparing and adapting our schedules for this term, particularly following a recent provincial government requirement to limit the number of students in our instructional spaces to 10 people. Some students with in-person classes and labs, along with faculty who teach these classes, had their schedules adjusted to meet this requirement. We are grateful to everyone for their co-operation and understanding. 

There was an exemption to the 10-person limit for programs that support the healthcare response to COVID-19. At Humber, these programs include: 

  • Biotechnology
  • Nursing
  • Paramedic
  • Personal Support Worker
  • Pharmacy Technician
  • Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Management
  • Occupational Therapist Assistant & Physiotherapist Assistant

We know that the COVID-19 situation is evolving. As always, we are committed to keeping you informed and connected, and we will keep you up to date on any future government or public health directives that may impact the college or your classes. 

We have measures in place to make our campuses as safe as possible. For students who must be on-campus for more than one class in a day, lunchrooms that allow for adequate physical distancing have been set up. 

I encourage you to visit the student services updates page for all the online learning and virtual supports and services available to help you succeed, and to download the MyHumber and Humber Guardian apps, if you have not already done so. On December 21, the Ontario Government announced the implementation of a province-wide shutdown beginning Saturday, December 26 at 12:01 a.m. and lasting for 28 days in southern Ontario and 14 days in northern Ontario. Please see the full announcement here.

The Winter 2021 academic calendar remains unchanged. Classes begin the week of January 18, including courses with an in-person component. We recognize that the province-wide shutdown may impact placements for some students. We will contact any affected students as more information becomes available.

Humber’s academic offering of interactive online education remains the same. For on-campus activity, in accordance with the Ministry of Colleges and Universities directive issued on December 4, 2020, the number of students in a learning space is restricted to 10 (with exceptions for a limited number of programs that support the healthcare response to COVID-19). Students impacted by these changes will receive further communication directly from their program.

Humber will be closed for the winter holiday break at the end of regular business hours on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 and will reopen on Monday, January 4, 2021.

As of this update, we anticipate that Humber’s on-campus services will be the same for Winter 2021 as they were for Fall 2020. For the latest information regarding on-campus services, please visit our FAQ page.

Humber is committed to continuing to provide many online services to support student success. The latest information regarding student services can be found here, along with Humber’s ongoing pledge to students.

Important Updates for Winter Break

With the winter holidays approaching, we wanted to let you know about upcoming key dates, update you on student service availability over the holidays and remind you about the health and safety measures that all students must follow when returning to campus in the new year.

Key Dates

  • Fall semester grades will be available on December 23, 2020
  • Humber is closed for the holiday break as of 6:00 p.m. on December 23, 2020
  • Humber reopens at 8:00 a.m. on January 4, 2021
  • Academic standing information will be available on January 4, 2021
  • The Contact Centre, Financial Aid and other Registrar services will be closed from December 24, 2020 to January 3, 2021, reopening on January 4, 2021
  • Humber's Winter term begins on January 18, 2021
  • The University of Guelph-Humber's Winter term begins on January 11, 2021
  • Last day to drop a course for refund is January 29, 2021
  • Winter Reading Week is Monday March 8, 2021 - Friday March 12, 2021, inclusive

Students who are in Residence

  • The last day of Fall residence is December 19, 2020
  • Move-in day for Winter is January 9, 2021 for University of Guelph-Humber and January 16, 2021 for Humber
  • Residents will have the opportunity to sign up to connect with a residence staff over the break, and to be advised of any virtual events taking place over the break

Travel and Health and Safety Reminders

For any student, domestic or international, who is traveling outside of the province or country during the Winter Break, please ensure you are aware of medical/travel insurance requirements, along with local travel health and safety measures, including the need to quarantine and provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test, where applicable.

The Government of Canada continues to advise all Canadians to avoid non-essential travel outside of the country. Anyone returning to Canada is required to self-isolate for 14 days. More information is available here. Please note that students who live in residence will not be able to quarantine in residence.

For anyone travelling outside of Canada, in order to return to campus in the new year, when you have completed your quarantine, you are required to provide a copy of negative COVID-19 test results before returning. Please send a screen capture or photo of your negative test results to covidreporting@humber.ca.

International students travelling into Canada are to complete the Travel Letter and Quarantine Plan forms. 

Access to Campus

  • Humber campuses will be closed as of 6:00 pm on December 23, 2020 and reopening on Monday, January 4, 2021. Students will not have access to campus during this period.
  • Any student who requires access to campus between January 4 and January 17, 2021 must have approval and make specific arrangements with their program and the Department of Public Safety. Once the approval is granted and arrangements are made, students should phone security at 416-675-8500 for access to campus when they arrive. Residents who have been approved for early arrival may use their access card to enter the residence.

Student Services, Supports and Resources

We know we are all living, studying and working in challenging times. The health and safety of students and staff is Humber's top priority.

  • If you were on campus in the 14 days leading up to the holiday break, AND, you have tested positive for COVID-19, you think you might have COVID-19, or have been in contact with someone who has COVID-19, contact the COVID Reporting HealthTeam at 416-675-5007 or covidreporting@humber.ca.
  • The Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre (SWAC) is closed during the holiday period outlined above. If at any time you need immediate personal support or counselling, there are resources to help:
    • You can access the Good2Talk Helpline at 1-866-925-5454
    • You can use Therapy Assist Online which provides online and mobile tools
    • Call Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000.
  • If you are in crisis and need urgent mental health support, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department.
  • If you are not feeling well, think that you have COVID-19, have had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, or are experiencing COVID-19 related symptoms, contact Telehealth or your health care practitioner to determine next steps.

Returning to Campus

Please be reminded about the following health and safety measures if you are required to be on campus during the Winter 2021 term.

  • All Humber students scheduled to be on campus are required to complete the Return to Campus Agreement using DocuSign. This agreement was sent to you by email from dse@camail.docusign.net. Please sign and submit this form if you have not already done so.
  • You will need to complete the COVID-19 Self-Assessment Form using the free Humber Guardian app (Apple StoreGoogle Play Store), before attending campus each day. Take a screenshot of your screening approval in case Public Safety asks to see it.
  • Masks are mandatory inside all campus buildings. Please bring a mask with you to campus each day. If you forget, there are disposable masks available at the entryways.
  • Physical distancing is required. There are signs around campus to help remind everyone to stay six feet apart, wherever possible. Please follow all posted guidelines, including room and elevator capacities and closure notices, as well as directional signage.
  • If you feel sick, please stay home.

December 5, 2020 - New Ministry Directive on Limiting Numbers in Instructional Spaces

As a result of lockdown restriction information received yesterday evening from the Ministry of Colleges and Universities, Humber is required to make changes to some courses with in-person delivery for the remainder of the Fall 2020 semester. 

Effective immediately, in addition to our current physical distancing requirements, we must now limit the number of students in our instructional spaces to 10 people. This is a requirement for all colleges and universities in a region currently under a provincially mandated Lockdown.

Students will receive more information from their program directly regarding any impacts or changes to their class. 

The following Humber programs are not impacted as there is a government exception for programs that support the healthcare response to COVID-19.

  • Nursing
  • Paramedic
  • Personal Support Worker
  • Pharmacy Technician
  • Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Management
  • Occupational Therapist Assistant & Physiotherapist Assistant

The government announced the implementation of lockdown restrictions last month, beginning November 23 for a period of at least 28 days.

The health and safety of the Humber community continues to be our top priority. We understand that direction and advice from government and public health authorities is evolving and we are working to respond rapidly while ensuring students will be able to complete their studies.

Update: Ontario Government Announcement on Fri. Nov. 20

Today, the Government of Ontario announced the implementation of targeted temporary measures to move Toronto (along with Peel Region) into lockdown restrictions beginning Monday, November 23 at 12:01 a.m. for a period of at least 28 days. Please see the full announcement here.

Humber’s current academic offering, both interactive online and in-person education, remains the same. There are no changes to on campus teaching and instruction as these courses were previously identified as only being able to be delivered in-person. 

Here are some specific updates to Humber’s on-campus services:

- The locations and hours of Food Services on campus remain unchanged. Seating areas in the food courts on campus and residence cafeterias remain closed.

- There will be no changes to the operation of Humber’s Child Development Centre, with a limited capacity for 45 children.

- Gyms and fitness centres at North and Lakeshore Campuses will be closed.

- Residences will remain open.

- We recognize that the lockdown measures in Toronto and Peel Region may impact placements for some students. We will contact any affected students as more information becomes available.

- Only employees deemed to be essential to campus and academic operations should be onsite. All other employees should continue to work remotely. It is critical that we limit the number of people on campus to support public health measures.

In keeping with the recommendations of public health and government authorities, there may be additional changes to available on-campus services and supports. Any new information will be shared with the Humber community as decisions are made.

President's Message: Humber to offer both online and limited in-person education in Winter 2021 term

As the global pandemic continues, we remain committed to providing you with a rich, career-focused education, academic and student services and supports, and innovative opportunities for connection and collaboration with faculty and peers at Humber and around the globe.

We know that this coming Winter semester will be different for everyone. We welcome those of you who are starting at Humber, and welcome back those who are continuing or completing your studies. No matter where you are in your educational journey, what hasn’t changed is our commitment to you.

Following our announcement last month that the Winter 2021 term would include both interactive online and in-person education, Faculties have completed a thorough review of their programs and courses for the upcoming semester. To ensure the health and safety of our community, 52 per cent of our programs will be offered entirely online, with the remainder having both online and in-person components. Eighty-four per cent of courses, including all electives, will be delivered online.

Academic Delivery

Winter term academic plans have been designed to meet students’ needs and follow Humber’s tradition of excellence in teaching and learning, and expertise in delivering online courses. Please note:

  • Online learning will include virtual experiential activities and opportunities for students to engage meaningfully with their professors and each other using various technologies.
  • On-campus learning will only occur for courses where it is safe and necessary to do so.
  • Courses with in-person requirements will likely also have online components.
  • The amount of time that students will be required to be on campus will be limited to those specific courses.
  • Regardless of delivery mode, all classes will include regular interaction with your peers and faculty.
  • Your professors will be accessible and have regular office hours. They will also make online lectures and coursework available outside of classes (i.e. posted on Blackboard)
  • Work-Integrated-Learning remains an important part of our program delivery. Each program will determine how it is integrated into respective curriculum during the Winter term. This includes off-campus activity such as field and clinical placements.
  • The college may need to change plans for in-person learning, subject to government and public health directives and/or additional health and safety considerations.

Virtual Open House

We know that new students may have questions about the upcoming semester and life as a Humber student. This Fall’s Virtual Open House will be held on Saturday, November 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More information is available here.

Student Services, Fees and Financial Support

Student services will remain primarily online for the Winter term. Please see the latest list of services and their mode of delivery. Winter Orientation will be offered entirely online. More information will be available and sent to students in December.

We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic has increased financial stress for many students. In order to help ease this stress, Humber established the Support our Students Fund to assist new and returning students who are experiencing financial hardship. This fund will continue to provide support in the Winter term.

Financial aid information, including bursaries and scholarships, can be found on our website. If you have questions, please email finaid@humber.ca. We’ve also posted information about government support for students.

There are no changes to tuition fees for the Winter 2021 term. Tuition fees are established in accordance with the requirement of the Ministry of Colleges and Universities. They support the cost of academic program delivery and general college operations. Tuition is not specific to location or mode of delivery (in-person or online), as it funds ongoing instruction, assessment and administration of programs and courses. Humber has also made additional investments to support the transition of the majority of our courses and services to online delivery.

Compulsory student fees reflect our ability to deliver services. These fees were adjusted for the current term and the same adjusted fee structure will be implemented for the Winter term. Information will be posted online shortly.

Your Safety and Well-Being

The safety of our community members remains our top priority. We understand that direction and advice from government or public health authorities may change quickly and we may need to respond just as rapidly. This may mean needing to slow down or reduce on-campus activity or shift our approach, and we are prepared to do that.

We will provide you with clear, ongoing communications and keep you informed of any impacts on your studies or our services. We expect to announce our detailed Winter 2021 program and course-level delivery plans, including information about field and clinical placements by the end of October.  

The health and safety of our community members remains our top priority. You can expect that programs will continue to be either fully online or have a mix of online learning and limited in-person components. Most student services will continue to be offered virtually as well. 

We know you need course-level information to make your plans. We are working hard to ensure we provide you the full picture for your courses and activities in advance of the November 11 Winter term tuition deposit date. We are currently:  

  • reviewing all our programs and courses and their learning outcomes

  • monitoring the local COVID-19 situation, and required health and safety measures 
  • working with our industry and community partners to ensure we have clear information about the availability and format of work integrated learning opportunities.

Since we first welcomed students and staff back to campus in July for our summer pilot, we have been carefully monitoring the impact of in-person activity. We have also surveyed students about their experiences with online learning and later this fall, we will be asking you for feedback about your experiences this term. 

While we are focused on your future, we want to ensure you have the supports you need now to be successful. As you continue your studies this term, I encourage you to access our virtual student services and supports and to share your feedback with your professors and college staff.
